A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court charged with disorderly behavior following an incident in Lisnagelvin Shopping Centre.

James Briers (25) of no fixed abode was charged following reports of a man causing a disturbance on August 3 in the shopping centre.

Police initially tried to calm Briers and appeared to be succeeding until his girlfriend arrived to try and take him home. Upon her arrival, Briers began to shout threats and abuse.

Briers pleaded guilty to the charge of disorderly behavior.

A defense solicitor said that his previous record was 'concerning' but added that it was 'promising' that this most recent offence didn't include assaulting police.

He was sentenced to four months, suspended for two years.
