History-making first black mayor of Derry to be honoured at civic reception in Killaloe

A civic reception will be held in Killaloe, County Clare in August to to honour the newly-elected Lilian Seenoi-Barr, Mayor of Derry & District of Strabane.

Hosted by Killaloe Municipal District, the civic reception is being held "in recognition of Cllr Seenoi-Barr's tireless work and raising awareness regarding issues such as racial inequality, migration, women’s health and housing and the continuation of North-South political, socio-economic and tourism cooperation evident in the Municipal District of Killaloe.

Lilian Seenoi-Barr became the first black mayor of a council in Northern Ireland in June.

The 42-year-old SDLP representative, originally from Kenya, described herself as a “Maasai woman and a Derry girl”.

The ceremony will be held in the offices of Killaloe Municipal District, Mountshannon Road, Scarriff on Friday, August 2, at 6pm.

The official opening of the Scarriff Harbour Festival will also take place later that evening.
