Trespasser charged with theft of whiskey bottles from Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin

Man returned for trial to Derry Crown Court on 28 charges

Derry Court

A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court charged with trespassing and stealing two bottles of Jameson whiskey from Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin.

Colm McLaughlin (19) of Farland Way in Derry was charged with the offences that occurred on June 25.

The court heard police observed on CCTV two men, with one, believed to be McLaughlin, trying to break the window of the building.

Police then attended Sunrise 24/7 where a man had been observed with two bottles of drink while covered in blood.

When arrested, McLaughlin gave a breath reading of 145. McLaughlin claimed to have been at a house party in the Bogside and denied the offences, claiming that the figure observed on the CCTV wasn't him.

McLaughlin has 21 previous convictions, including eight for burglary.

Police objected to bail as they say he is at clear risk of reoffending.

Defence Barrister Sinead Rogan said that McLaughlin had been 'forthcoming when arrested' and had provided the breath sample without issue.

She added that he is currently under probation orders and 'obviously has a problem with alcohol'.

Bail was refused and he will appear again on July 18.
