Woman who spat in police officer's eye jailed for four months

Derry Magistrate's Court

A woman who spat in a police officer's eye has been jailed at Derry Magistrate's Court today.

Biddy Mongan (25) with an address at Whitewell Road in Belfast admitted assaulting police during an incident outside the former Bank of Ireland building in Derry city centre.

The court heard that on December 17 2023 police were called to that location to a report of two females fighting.

When they arrived Mongan was being 'irate and aggressive' and was asked on numerous occasions to calm down.

At 1.47pm she was arrested and in the course of the arrest she spat in a police officer's face and eye.

Mongan was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital in a police cell van and while there she asked to use the toilet.

When she was told to wait for another officer she urinated in the vehicle.

She was sentenced to four months in prison.
