A Facebook group called ‘Save Benbradagh’ have opened a fundraiser in opposition to the construction of new turbines on Benbradagh hill in Dungiven.

Catherine Hegarty, a member of ‘Save Benbradagh’, has opened the fundraiser via the Gofundme website.

“We have a beautiful mountain in the background of Dungiven.

“There are stories about it, and there's poems about it. The whole back end of it has a huge wind farm, but it doesn't break the ridge. You don't actually see it from the town,” Catherine explained.

“You can see the whole way over to Donegal from up there and we all enjoy it.

“Everybody was going up to see the northern lights at the top last weekend.”

Catherine says that the majority of the community does not want turbines placed above the ridge, as they will obscure the hilltop.

“The local community is really up in arms about it,” she continued.

“We have poems, songs, Irish history about Benbradagh and some of the stones up there have names. You’re talking about hundreds of years of tradition.

“It's not that we are anti-renewables. We're just trying to protect parts that shouldn't be touched.

“Enough is enough,” she said.

The money will be used to print flyers, for postal drops, banners and to pay for community meetings.

Catherine confirmed that the fundraising will stay open until the end of their campaign or significant results.
