A toxic substance, suspected to be rat poison, has been found on the grounds of the former Maghera High School site.

Mid Ulster District Council has yet to confirm whether or not the substance found earlier this week is rat poison.

“The Council has been made aware of suspected rat poison being discovered at the former Maghera High School site, which is presently not open to the public, therefore whoever was responsible is also trespassing on private lands,” a spokesperson for Mid Ulster Council said.

The discovery comes a week after a protected bird of prey, a sparrowhawk, was found dead on the same grounds where Mid Ulster Council contractors were cutting hedges.
