The vibrant new logo for Naíscoil An Phiarsaigh - Doire Trasna in Derry's Waterside
Without a shadow of a doubt, Irish-medium education is deeply rooted and absolutely thriving in communities right across the city and district.
In fact, the desire of people in Derry’s Waterside to come together and open an Irish-medium naíscoil (nursery school) in autumn 2024, is proof positive Irish-medium Education is “here to stay" - a description attributed to former Education Minister, Peter Weir in 2020.
Speaking to Derry Now, well-known Gaeilgeoir and educator, Charmaine Deery said although Naíscoil an Phiarsaigh, Doire Trasna was formed just a few short, it has already sourced a site.
“We have also obtained pre-school accommodation and funding,” added Charmaine.
“Having an Irish-medium Education provision in the Waterside has been an aspiration of the founding committee and local community for many years.
“We are working with Comhairle na Gaelscolaíochta - the advisory body for Irish-medium Education. Comhairle conducted a feasibility study, which highlighted the need for the provision.
“The committee of Naíscoil an Phiarsaigh, Doire Trasna is made up of local people from a range of different sectors, including experienced Irish medium teachers. They are really driven and determined to see the success of Naíscoil an Phiarsaigh.
“Parents of children who will be two years and ten months in autumn 2024 are encouraged to register their interest now for the first cohort of Naíscoil an Phiarsaigh pupils. Expressions of interests should be made via email to: naiscoilanphiarsaigh@gmail .com,” said Charmaine.
