Derry people earning £50 more than last year

Derry and Strabane's average weekly income is £50 higher than last year according to official statistics, however, data for real terms pay was not provided for the district.

Average weekly pay was £492.30 last year, up on last year's £441.10 according to Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agencies Employee Earnings in NI 2023 statistics.

Data is based on the employee's place of work and the median is used to find the average.

In the district men earned an average of £565.50 a week while women earned £428.80.

The average monthly pay for those in full time employment was £619.70 while part time was £218.30.

Women in full time employment in Derry made an average of £633.20 a week, while men made £616.60.

Across the North the average weekly earnings for people in full-time employment in April 2023 was £641, an increase of 7.4% from £597 in 2022. In real terms (adjusted for inflation) weekly earnings in the North decreased by 0.3% over the year to April 2023.

In the UK, weekly earnings were £682 in April 2023.

Women in part time employment in Derry and Strabane make an average of £218.30 a week. The data on men in part time employment was marked as 'unreliable' and no figure was given.

HOURLY INCOME

The data was also broken down by the hour. The district's hourly income is up over £1 on last year.

The median gross hourly pay excluding overtime in the district is £13.40, up £1.13 on last year's £12.27.

Men in the area received an average of £14 an hour while women received £12.70.

The average full time hourly pay in the district was £15.50. Men in full time employment earned an average of £15 an hour while women earned £18 an hour.

The average hourly part time worker earned £11.30. Men working part time earned an average of £12 an hour while women earned £11.10.

The highest hourly average in the North was in Belfast with £16.60 and the lowest was in Causeway Coast where earners received £12.80.

ANNUAL INCOME

Median Gross Annual Earnings in Derry City and Strabane was £24,709. The highest annual median was Belfast with £30,824 while the lowest was Ards and North Down £22,585.

Those in full time employment in Derry earned £30,155 on average while those working part time earned £11,097.

Women on average earned £21,586 while men earned £25,864. In full time employment women earned £31,335 while men earned £29,585.

Women in part time earned £10,495. Male part time was undefined.

HOURS WORKED

The average hours worked a week in Derry City and Strabane 31.5 hours with women working an average of 28.6 hours and men 34.2.
