A man who was convicted in his absence of a charge of dangerous driving has been fined and disqualified at Derry Magistrate's Court today.

Paul Christopher Harvey (41) of Grangewood Court in Derry was charged with criminal damage to a car wing mirror on December 12 last year.

He also faced a charge of dangerous driving on the Foyle Bridge on the same date.

The court heard that Harvey had not appeared and there was no explanation as to why he was absent.

District Judge Barney McElholm said that there would be a conviction on the papers.

He sentenced Harvey to a total fine of £500, ordered him to pay £550 in compensation and disqualified him from driving for 12 months.
