Judge says man called Lundy "may be as well to stay out of Derry"

Man returned for trial to Derry Crown Court on 28 charges

Derry Magistrates Court

A District Judge has said that a man called Lundy "may be as well to stay out of Derry" after he admitted two public order charges.

Joseph Lundy (30) of Old Mill Drive, Newtownabbey, appeared in Derry Magistrates Court charged with assault and disorderly behaviour.

The court heard how Lundy, on June 26 2020, assaulted a man on John Street in Derry. The incident was caught on CCTV from the Carlisle Road and a witness came forward to provide a statement.

Lundy pleaded guilty and the court heard how he no longer lives in the city.

A defence solicitor said that the incident occurred when the accused was 'in a drunken state'.

He said that his client had made admissions but would maintain it was self defence.

The solicitor said that the CCTV footage would show the defendant slap the other man then they embrace.

District Judge Barney McElholm fined him a total of £500 for the two charges.
