Public and groups encouraged to have their say on Glendermott Shared Space Masterplan consultation

Members of the public are being invited to attend a number of information meetings to view the emerging Glendermott Shared Space PEACEPLUS Project Masterplan.

Residents in the Drumahoe, Tullyally and Currynierin areas are being encouraged to attend the sessions to share their views on the design of the Glendermott Shared Space Project.

The PEACEPLUS bid will be strengthened if local people engage through each phase of the project.

The emerging plans have been co-designed with representatives of the local community groups over the past year and are now sufficiently designed to bring these plans to the wider community.

The Public Information Meetings will take place in three separate venues on Tuesday, August 1 and are open to residents, community groups and stakeholders with an interest in creating new and exciting shared outdoor space/s and address the much-needed investment in creating exemplar green spaces for the whole community.

An additional meeting will be held in the YMCA on August 16.

Council is applying for EU Peace Plus funding from the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) that, if successful, will be used to fund new inclusive shared Green Infrastructure spaces such as play parks, sports facilities, a new forest park and enhanced greenway connectivity physically linking the three communities together.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Patricia Logue, encouraged people to attend the meetings so the project can be tailored to meet their needs.

“The overall objective of the Glendermott Shared Space Project is to address community relations and tensions and the impact of the conflict on the area through the provision of new and inclusive shared spaces that will have a transformative effect on the local area and enable shared usage by groups and from different communities,” she said.

“It aims to regenerate green spaces to create a high quality, well connected shared space.

“It will be an interconnected green shared space for both communities and visitors that is non-contentious and non-sectarian through the regeneration of the lands between Drumahoe, Currynierin and Tullyally.

“These engagement events will focus on the capital and physical elements of the project to be included in the Masterplan for the area and will assist in the development of the bid in animating these new spaces through a cross-community participation programme.”

Council will take the lead on the physical/capital element (The Masterplan is the design of the Green Infrastructure (GI) shared space) and the cross-community programming and animation of the spaces will be tendered out for delivery by relevant organisations working with local communities.

Participants are invited to attend the most relevant and suitable information session for them, and preregistration is not required. Officers from Council’s Green Infrastructure Team will be in attendance to share the Glendermott Valley Masterplan and the detailed designs for each area.

There will be three consultation events on Tuesday, August 1 and a further event at Drumahoe YMCA on August 16.
