Derry Magistrates Court

A 24-year-old woman who has 85 previous convictions has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrate's Court today.

Biddy Mongan of Glenabbey Crescent in Derry appeared charged with disorderly behaviour aggravated by hostility based on race or religion on June 18.

The court heard that police were called to a report of a woman 'staggering across the road' in the Strand Road area at 9.20am on June 18.

They found the defendant who was 'clearly intoxicated' in breach of her bail.

When stopped by police Mongan was said to have threatened to kick one officer in an intimate area and called another 'a black Afro b-----d' and told him not to touch her.

She also was said to have racially abused two bystanders.

The officer said that if released Mongan would drink and she can't 'modify her behaviour' but the police and public would have to deal with it.

Defence counsel Eoghan Devlin said Mongan had had 'a difficult life' and was gathering a record for public order offences.

He described the defendant as 'her own worst enemy'.

District Judge Oonagh Mullen said that while it was a sad case the risk of offending was too high.

She remanded Mongan in custody to appear again on June 23.
