St. Mary’s College, winners of 'The Amelia Earhart STEM Challenge'
In a great display of determination and knowledge, St. Mary's College emerged as the victors in The Amelia Earhart STEM Challenge hosted by Ulster University.
The competition, held annually to celebrate the pioneering spirit of Amelia Earhart and her contributions to aviation and STEM fields, saw Year 9 students from across Northern Ireland compete in a series of challenges.
The Royal Academy of Engineering Amelia Earhart STEM Challenge, now in its second year, aims to foster interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics among young minds, while honouring the remarkable legacy of the famous aviator. The competition features a range of tasks that test participants' problem-solving skills, creativity, knowledge and teamwork.
This year, St. Mary's College, known for its exceptional STEM students, rose to the occasion, demonstrating exceptional talent and dedication. The St. Mary’s Team, comprised of Ann Doherty, Sarah Doherty, Casey Hegarty, Jaroslava Khaidukova and Abbie-Rose McGeady navigated through a series of challenges with precision and ingenuity, ultimately securing the top spot among formidable competitors.
One of the judges of the competition, Gill Gallagher, praised the students for their exceptional commitment and hard work.
"The St. Mary's College team exemplifies the spirit of Amelia Earhart. Their dedication, collaborative spirit, and passion for STEM have truly paid off," she exclaimed.
The team's success at The Amelia Earhart STEM Challenge was rewarded with an amazing top prize jointly sponsored by City of Derry Airport and Cutting Edge Helicopters of a VIP tour and helicopter ride over Amelia’s flight path over Derry for the five students and their teacher Mrs Aine Northey.

As the winning team look forward to their visit to City of Derry Airport, the legacy of Amelia Earhart shines brighter than ever, and many more young minds have been encouraged to explore the vast possibilities of STEM fields and dare to dream big.
Results: 1st, St. Mary’s College; 2nd, Thornhill College; 3rd, Enniskillen Royal Grammar School.
