A Ghanaian man living in Letterkenny has been jailed at Derry Magistrate's Court today for assaulting two doctors in Altnagelvin Hospital and assaulting police.
Philip Doodoo (22) of no fixed abode admitted three assaults and a charge of disorderly behaviour and one of criminal damage to a crash trolley on January 29 this year.
The court heard that police were called to a report of an aggressive man in A&E.
Doodoo was 'verbally aggressive' and was wandering around the area despite being asked not to.
He approached one doctor and pushed him with his chest and demanded 'what are you going to do about it?'
Doodoo then kicked at a medical crash cart which is deemed as'a vital piece of equipment'.
When police tried to calm the defendant down he called them' muppets'.
Another member of the medical staff tried to engage with the defendant but he lunged at her putting her in fear of being assaulted.
Police eventually were forced to remove the defendant from A&E and while they were doing this he shoulder charged an officer.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that at the time of these charges the defendant was undergoing a 'mental health eposide.'
He said Doodoo regretted what happened and apologised for his actions and was aware that the courts would not tolerate 'hospitals being turned into war ones.'
District Judge Barney McElholm said that hopefully the defendant had learned his lesson and imposed a sentence of two months in prison.
