Derry Court: Man who went to PSNI for no reason was 'author of his own misfortune'

A man who appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court today was the 'author of his own misfortune' after he went to the Strand Road PSNI Station and refused to leave.

John Paul McClelland (42) of Glenabbey Crescent admitted charges of disorderly behaviour, resisting police and possessing cannabis on January 25 this year.

The court heard that around midnight police attended the pedestrian door to the police station where a male, the defendant, was banging on the door.

The defendant was asked to leave and refused to do so and was 'shouting and swearing' at police and acting aggressively.

When arrested a small quantity of cannabis was found on him.

At interview McClelland made full admissions.

Defence solicitor Kevin Casey said his client's record had been 'pestering out' in recent times.

He said this was 'a very rare night out' for the defendant who had 'no useful explanation' as to why he went to the police station.

The solicitor said that his client was 'embarrassed' by the whole incident.

McClelland was fined a total of £400.
