Derry Court: Woman just released from prison jailed after calling police 'dirty huns and Fenians'

A woman who was released from prison on Friday has been jailed at Derry Magistrate's Court after calling police officers 'dirty huns and Fenians'.

Biddy Mongan (24) of Glenabbey Crescent in Derry admitted a charge of disorderly behaviour and two assaults on police on February 17.

The court heard that Mongan was released from prison on Friday and at 9.30pm police found her lying face down in a puddle in Sackville Street.

She was 'extremely intoxicated' and as police tried to rouse her she became abusive calling them huns.

She also kicked out at officers and spat at one of them.

She continued to be abusive calling police 'dirty huns and Fenians'.

She was taken to the hospital by police and again spat at an officer.

Defence counsel Eoghan Devlin said that the defendant was one of the 'least fortunate person' he had ever represented.

He said her early life was one of 'tragedy and neglect' and she had a dependency on alcohol.

The barrister described her as 'a young woman old before her time.'

Deputy District Judge Alan White said he would take account of what the barrister had said.

He sentenced Mongan to two months in prison.
