Derry Court: Suspended sentence for man who smashed bottle and held jagged end towards police

A man who smashed a bottle and held the jagged end towards police has been given a suspended sentence at Derry Magistrate's Court today.

James Doherty (27) of Capall Court in Derry admitted a charge of possessing an offensive weapon on March 19 last.

The court heard that police were called to an address to a report of a disturbance.

Doherty appeared and shouted at police 'I am not going back to Maghaberry I have done nothing.'

He then smashed a bottle he was holding and pointed the jagged end towards police and shouted 'you come down here and see what happens.'

Eventually Doherty came to police and was arrested.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said there was no suggestion Doherty had lunged at police or anything like that.

He said his client had pleaded albeit not at an early stage.

Doherty was sentenced to 5 months in prison suspended for two years.
