Dungiven will play host to a world-class musical partnership next weekend when banjo masters Damien O’Kane and Ron Block bring their acclaimed band to St. Canice’s GAC Club on Saturday, October 11 at 8pm.
The concert offers a unique opportunity to see two of the finest exponents of the banjo share the stage in an intimate local setting. O’Kane, originally from Coleraine, has built a reputation as one of the most inventive musicians in Irish traditional music. His boundary-pushing approach to the banjo has earned him international acclaim, both as a solo artist and through collaborations with Yorkshire folk singer Kate Rusby.
Ron Block, meanwhile, is a household name in bluegrass circles. Best known as a long-time member of Alison Krauss & Union Station, he is a multiple Grammy Award winner and a key figure in shaping modern American roots music. His fluid picking style and deep musicality have inspired generations of players across the globe.
Together, O’Kane and Block are a formidable force. Their joint performances are a vibrant meeting of two traditions: the drive and sparkle of American bluegrass set against the lyrical melodies and rhythms of Irish folk. The result is music that is at once technically dazzling and emotionally uplifting.
Audiences can also expect the warmth and humour that both musicians are known for, alongside the energy of their outstanding band. For music lovers in the Roe Valley and beyond, this promises to be a night to remember—an intimate encounter with two giants of the banjo, right in the heart of the community.
Praise for O'Kane and Block:
“I challenge banjo non-believers not to be charmed." — The Journal of Music
"I was utterly blown away by these guys. Exquisite musicianship. My gig of the year." — Ralph McTell
"…inspirational…a new and innovative sound. The energy, groove and technique will inspire musicians of any genre." – Gerry ‘Banjo’ O’Connor
