Over 500 people joined the Mid Ulster March Against Genocide from Magherafelt to Moyola Precision Engineering in Castledawson, protesting the 'government's funding of F-35 part factories complicit in genocide'.
The march, marking the anniversary of the second year of the genocide, was organised by the Mid Ulster Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (Mid Ulster IPSC) and Derry IPSC.
The march brought Castledawson roundabout, one of the main arteries of the road system, to a halt, creating a substantial queue of cars, before proceeding to march to the gates of the factory.
"While the roundabout was brought to a halt for a short period of time, we feel this was a necessary escalation with genocide parts being manufactured on our doorstep and our taxpayer money funding them. The UN has ruled that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza and Moyola Precision Engineering is complicit in creating parts for the very same warplanes carrying out the genocide, with our government giving them millions in funding," a spokesperson for the Mid Ulster IPSC said.
"Earlier this month, InvestNI and Moyola PE exhibited at the Defences and Security Equipment International (DSEI) exhibition in London, the World's largest arms fair, ActNow revealed. This was while a worldwide Freedom Flotilla attempted to break the siege of Gaza, and bring aid to the very people being bombed by those arms."
Speakers at the end of the march outside the gates of Moyola PE included Saoirse O’Neill and Pádraig Mac Niocaill from the Mid Ulster IPSC, Dermot Kelly of the Armagh IPSC, Irish Language activist Cassie Ní Chatháin, Becca Bor from Jews for Palestine Ireland, and Eamonn McCann and Goretti Horgan from the Raytheon 9.
Demands of the march include:
• An end to Invest NI funding for Moyola and other complicit factories across the North.
• An end to our taxpayer subsidies for companies feeding the war machine. • That our MLAs, MPs, and local councillors publicly back this call and use their platforms to demand that Moyola withdraw from the F-35 programme. • A nationwide suspension of all involvement in the F-35 programme.
• That our government ensures safe passage for the Freedom Flotilla.
"While Lough Neagh is a toxic bright green, our tap water runs mouldy, and our water, sewage and health services crippled, our government has given millions to factories complicit in genocide like Moyola Precision Engineering, and our local council has given thousands more in rates relief. Following pressure, Moyola Precision Engineering has attempted to hide references to F-35 part manufacture from its website. The pressure will not ease up until they fully stop production of F-35 parts. We do not want parts for warplanes bombing children made in Mid Ulster," Pádraig Mac Niocaill said.
Saoirse O’Neill added: “The UN has declared what is happening in Gaza to be a genocide, joined by leading international organisations, human rights organisations, and legal experts around the world. Under UK and international law, there is a duty to halt arms transfers where there is a clear risk they could be used in war crimes — continuing to supply parts for the F-35 is a breach of those obligations. We will not rest until Moyola divests.”
