Sadness following the passing of Dungiven ‘legend’ who brought ' great joy to everyone'

The late Joe O'Neill from Dungiven who was laid to rest today.

There was sadness as a well-known Dungiven man, who passed away at the weekend, was laid to rest this morning.

Joseph (Joe) O’Neill died peacefully at Altnagelvin Hospital on Sunday, August 3.

The father-of-five, who was laid to rest following Requiem Mass in St Patrick’s Church in Dungiven earlier today, was well-known throughout the town and further afield.

He previously owned the now closed Tavern Bar on the town’s Main Street and also was a much-loved ice cream man in years gone by.

Mr O’Neill, a grandad and great-grandad, was a committed supporter of Dungiven and Derry football for many years.

Paying tribute, St Canice GAC Dungiven described Joe as a ‘legend’.

“The Committee, Players and Members of St Canice's GAC Dungiven are deeply saddened to hear of the sad passing of Joe O' Neill, brother of committee member Mary Cooke. Joe was a true Gael, following Dungiven and Derry football for many years, and of course a story with every game. As well as being a committed supporter, he has also been a regular and valued customer in the club for many years,” read a social media post.

Joe was a real character with a vibrant and welcoming personality. He had a special way of interacting with and bringing great joy to everyone in his company. He had a sense of humour rarely matched by anyone and no one could tell a joke or a story quite like him. There is no doubt Joe’s sad passing will leave a real void in the social fabric of the town and he will be sadly missed.

We offer our sincere condolences to Carmel, Ciara (Eoín), Colleen, Ryan (Grainne), Lorna (Brian) and Aileen and the entire O’Neill family circle and the many friends who had the honour of knowing him.

May he rest in peace.  Ar dheis lámh Dé go raibh a anam uasal.”
