Three men charged over alleged 'crime spree' from Armagh to County Derry

The case was heard in Coleraine Magistrates Court this morning.

A man has appeared before a local court charged in connection with a serious assault which has left his victim in an Intensive Care Unit.

Appearing from custody, via videolink, before Coleraine Magistrates Court this morning (Monday) was Patrick James McDonald, of Rossnagalliagh Park in Derry.

The 34 year-old is charged with unlawfully and maliciously causing grievous bodily harm to a man on February 1.

He is further charged with stealing a set of keys and an iPhone 15, valued at £1,200, on the same date.

Additional charges of driving while disqualified, driving without a licence or insurance were also put to McDonald during this morning's hearing.

An investigating officer told the court that the injured party, a 22 year-old man, was in the area of Irish Green Street in Limavady at around 3am on February 1 when a black coloured Peugeot pulled up beside him.

The officer stated that the injured party claimed that McDonald exited the vehicle, approached the victim and punched him causing him to fall to the ground.

It was claimed that McDonald continued assaulting the injured party and allegedly stole an iPhone and house keys during the incident.

The investigating officer said the injured party initially felt okay but as the week progressed he claimed a pain in his stomach 'got worse and worse'.

The injured party attended A&E at Causeway Hospital in Coleraine on Thursday (February 6) and a short time later he was admitted to ICU where he currently remains.

The court was told that the victim has been getting help with his kidney function and has been ventilated within the last 48 hours.

The investigating officer stated that the doctor has said the injured party has 'reduced kidney function due to trauma suffered' and he has sustained other injuries to his spleen, liver and bowel.

McDonald's solicitor Keith Kyle said he would not be applying for bail for McDonald.

District Judge Austin Kennedy remanded McDonald in custody to appear before Limavady Magistrates Court on March 5.
