Sinn Féin Councillor Sean McGlinchey has hit out at those behind what he has described as a 'racist attack' in Dungiven at the weekend.
The incident, which happened on the town's Main Street on Sunday evening, June 2, involved a number of individuals and employees from a local takeaway.
Councillor McGlinchey said he believes an altercation took place after a racist remark was made.
A man sustained injuries to his forehead and forearms as a result of the incident.
A video of the attack, which was widely circulated online, shows at least one of the individuals brandishing a hurling stick.
Speaking to the County Derry Post, Councillor McGlinchey described the incident as 'scandalous'.
“It's a disgrace in this day and age that these takeaway workers were subjected to this behaviour,” he said.
“These people own two businesses in the town and bring a lot of positive things to Dungiven.
“They don't deserve to be treated in this manner by these people.
“The racist behaviour of the individuals involved does not represent the people of Dungiven,” he added.
The PSNI have confirmed that they are investigating the incident.
Inspector Ferriby said: “At around 8:30pm, it was reported that a man in his 30s who was sitting in a vehicle was approached by two men. It was reported that the two men verbally and physically assaulted the male, who received injuries to both his forehead and forearms following the incident.
“Enquiries are continuing and at this stage, the incident is being treated as a racially motivated hate crime.
“We would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 1647 02/06/24. A report can also be made using the online reporting form via psni.police.uk/makeareport . Alternatively, information can be provided to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org.”
