1st Moyola Scout Group honours new Explorers at special ceremony

Three boy scouts from County Derry have been honoured at a ceremony to mark them becoming Explorer scouts.

Gary Kane, Cory Campbell and Patrick Loane, members of 1st Moyola Scout Group in Castledawson, were all awarded the title of Explorers at a presentation held last Monday evening.

Former County Commissioner, Paul Meikel, presented the boys with their Certificates of Investiture.

Mr Meikel, who was standing in on behalf of County Commissioner Stephanie Meikel, applauded all members of 1st Moyola Scout Group for their dedication.

Addressing the new Explorers, Mr Meikel said: “If you live by the name Explorer you take up every challenge given to you. Everything is open to you now.

“Part of scouting is your service and part of Explorers is getting to train as young leaders so I would encourage you to continue with that. We need you to take up leadership and that starts now.

“Our county, big though it may be geographically and small by number, is very good at giving people opportunities. Take the opportunity as you can have a fantastic time and it can take you far beyond the doors of Moyola.”

1st Moyola Scout Group was formed 102 years ago and members meet every Monday night.

The group welcomes boys and girls aged between 4 years-old and 18 years-old and scouting is all about fun, teamwork and adventure.

1st Moyola are currently scouting for leaders to help with the Squirrels/ Beavers and Cubs.
