Appeal issued for responsible dog ownership at Mid Ulster’s public parks

Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Dominic Molloy, is appealing for dog owners in the district to exercise responsible ownership when visiting our public parks by ensuring their dogs are always kept on leads and that no mess is left behind.

This has become a recurring issue in parks and open spaces, with the Chair highlighting ‘hot spots’ for dog fouling including Mullaghyboy Road, Bellaghy, Fairhill Road, Crawfordsburn Estate and Drive and Largantogher Walkway, all in Maghera.

Speaking on the issue, the Chair said: “Our public parks are wonderful spaces for recreation, relaxation, and connecting with nature. I have noticed however, that there has been an increase in instances, particularly in Dungannon Park and Windmill Wood, Dungannon, where dogs are off-leash, leading to concerns about safety and cleanliness. I want to emphasise the importance of responsible dog ownership to ensure that everyone can continue to enjoy our parks safely and comfortably.

“Firstly, I kindly request that all dog owners keep their dogs on leads when in public parks. This measure is crucial to ensure the safety of not only your pets but also other park visitors, including children, elderly individuals, and those with fears or allergies. By keeping dogs on leads, we can create a more harmonious environment for everyone to share.

“Secondly, I urge all dog owners to be responsible stewards by cleaning up after their pets. It is essential for the cleanliness and hygiene of our public spaces that dog waste is promptly and properly disposed of. Dog waste left behind can pose health risks and detract from the overall enjoyment of our parks.

“Let's work together to maintain the beauty and functionality of our public parks. By following these simple guidelines, we can ensure that our shared spaces remain safe, welcoming, and enjoyable for all members of our community.”

If you allow your dog to foul in a public place without cleaning up the mess, you are committing an offence and could be fined £50.
