Benbradagh Area Community 5k walk/ 10k run to raise funds to provide toys for local children

A series of events, including a 5k walk/10k charity run, will be held in Dungiven this Saturday.

This Saturday, November 25 at 10am there will be a community 5km walk and 10km run to raise funds for the annual Benbradagh Christmas Toy Appeal. The money raised will be used to buy vouchers for toy stores and other shops for older children.

The cost-of-living crisis has plunged many people into insecurity and it is times like this where a sense of community is so important to help those in need.

The heavy squeeze on household and business budgets with the rising cost of living and rising fuel and energy costs is having a severe impact on ordinary workers and families. For some, Christmas is their favourite time of the year, but for others it's a difficult period and as a community we need to rally around those who need to support.

The walk and run will both begin at the Dungiven Sports Pavillion and ends at St Patrick's College, Dungiven. Participants should arrive at least 15 minutes early in order to register to take part, changing and parking facilities will be available free of charge from the Sports Pavillion. There will be an opportunity to donate to our buckets at the registration point and around Dungiven throughout the course of the day.

It would great to see the whole community band together to support each other - young and old, sports organisations, new runners and experienced runners, walking groups, friends, families and community groups.

Alternatively, you can donate toys to any of the collection points at Eurospar Dungiven, Vivo Gortnaghey, Spar Feeny and the Sinn Féin Office Dungiven. All toy and money collections will end on December 17.

If you need assistance this Christmas, please contact the Facebook page: Benbradagh Christmas Appeal, or alternatively get in touch with Councillor Kathleen McGurk, Councillor Sean McGlinchey or Councillor Brenda Chivers.  It is always strictly confidential.

Meanwhile, a series of events are set to take place in Dungiven this Saturday afternoon as the town prepares for the switching on of the Christmas tree lights.

The events have been organised and funded by local business Nora & Katie and Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council.

A Makers Market will take place from 1pm to 6pm in a number of stores throughout the town, including Nora & Katie, Ros Oir, Groogans, Dungiven Regeneration, The Arcade and Monica's.

There will also be lots for the kids to do with an inflatable snow globe in the Main Street car park from 1pm to 6pm.

Fun kid's characters, a bouncing reindeer and a snow king can also be seen on the Main Street between 2.30pm and 5.30pm. There will be elf face painting and balloon modelling in the car park during the same hours.

There will be lots of entertainment with Mrs Claus telling stories outside Nora & Katie and Dungiven Community Choir and other local artists performing in the car park.

The festivities will culminate with a parade leaving the GAA Club at 5pm before making its way through the Main Street where the Christmas lights will officially be switched on.
