World Children's Day: Act now to save the children of Gaza

To mark World Children's Day vigils have been organised by the IPSC and will be held in Derry and Letterkenny.

The Derry vigil will be held tonight (Monday, November 20) at 6.15pm in Guildhall Square.

Speaking to Derry Now, Derry City and Strabane District councillor, Shaun Harkin (PBP) said: "According to the World Health Organisation a child is killed, on average, every 10 minutes in Gaza. Pre-mature babies have died because of Israel's inhumane siege of hospitals.

"More than 5000 children have been murdered by the IDF in Gaza. Thousands are missing. Thousands are injured. They cannot access food, water, medical help or find a safe place. Israel has turned Gaza into a hell for children.

"Everyday brings new horrors.  Forcing Israel to agree to a ceasefire is urgent to end famine conditions and the full blown humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

"Joe Biden, Rishi Sunak, Keir Starmer, Jeffrey Donaldson and others who voted in Westminster against an immediate ceasefire have the blood of Gazan children on their hands. They are complicit in war crimes Israel is committing, including genocide of the Palestinian people. It's shameful for the Irish government to refuse to sanction Israel and expel the Israeli ambassador. The world can see the barbarism of apartheid Israel and the complicity of its political, economic and military supporters, said Cllr Harkin.

He added: "Those across the world opposed to genocide and the murder of Palestinian children will escalate mass direct action on the White House, Westminster, the Dáil and Brussels for an immediate ceasefire and end to the Gaza slaughter.

"We will step up campaigns boycotting Israeli products and companies complicit in Israeli apartheid.

"We will block arms shipments to Israel that will be used to slaughter babies in Gaza.

"World Children's Day is a call to action to stop the slaughter of children in Gaza and genocide of Palestinians. Everyone can play a part."
