'Huge fantastic space lies unoccupied and un-occupiable in Ebrington'
Local campaign group 'Your Ebrington' has described the vibe at the musical protest in Ebrington on Saturday as "absolutely beautiful".
Speaking to Derry News, a spokesperson for the group said: "The vibe in Ebrington on Saturday was absolutely beautiful.
"Musicians came from all over the North West to participate and the crowd loved it giving their all in a sing-along. We cannot thank them enough for giving up their Saturday afternoon and sharing their music with us.
"Protest can and should take many forms so we're appealing to local artists, musicians, DJs and all other creatives to provide inspiration going forward to keep the momentum going until we get a win on the issue. The more pressure we continue to pile on the quicker it will be sorted.
"Take a walk through Guildhall Square most months of the year and there's something on for local people and tourists. Gazebos are currently tightly packed there for Oktoberfest whilst this huge fantastic space lies unoccupied and unoccupiable in Ebrington. Fatboy Slim, organised by Jika Jika, which sold out immediately, could have been a masterpiece had it been allowed to have been held in Ebrington.
"Ebrington Square, should events be reinstated, cannot be a summer month offering only. There is massive potential there for a Halloween Ball going forward. Most people spend several hours in the town anyway, rain or shine, so the weather shouldn't be used as an excuse. And if the weather is too much of an issue for some, find a way to provide some cover. It isn't rocket science.
"As we said before, we will continue in our efforts to move the issue along. Currently, we're being told that The Executive Office (TEO) is working urgently with Council to explore additional events for 2024.
"We asked people to contact their local MLAs and the MP on the issue, after all there isn't any opposition at this point to all types of events being held in the Square. What is the hold up now?
"This is an easy win for elected reps for this city. But in the absence of the issue being resolved and bookings being opened for 2024, we will be back in Ebrington this Saturday, October 14, at 2pm. Bring the dog, bring the wains and bring some craic!"
