Condolences have been extended to the family and friends of the young woman who was tragically killed at Ludden in Buncrana in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The victim has been named locally as Rebecca Browne who was from Derry, who was staying in Buncrana with friends.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Sandra Duffy, said: "My immediate thoughts are with the family and friends of the young woman who has died after being struck by a Garda car near Buncrana on Sunday morning. 

“This is a tragedy and the shock and heartbreak of this terrible incident will be felt right across the community today. 

“There must be a full and thorough investigation to get to the bottom of exactly how this happened and I would appeal to anyone with information to bring it forward.”

Rena Donaghey, Inishowen Fianna Fáil, councillor said: “Our sincere sympathy goes out to all of her entire family. It’s an awful shock and an awful tragedy and may God grant them all they need at this time.”

“There is an awful amount of sadness today in Galliagh,” posted SDLP Group Leader, Councillor Brian Tierney. “My thoughts are with the Smith and Browne families as they try to come to terms with the sad loss of Rebecca. Those who think of them today, a little prayer to Jesus say.”

The victim died having been struck by a Garda car at approximately 3:15am at the scene, which was quickly preserved for a full forensic examination. The road has since reopened.
