Nottingham schoolgirl Matilda Handy who inspired 'Postboxes to Heaven'.
Former Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Graham Warke (Independent) said he was "delighted" his 'Letters to Heaven postboxes' motion was unanimously passed at Thursday's plenary Council meeting.
Speaking to Derry Now, Alderman Warke explained the idea originated with one of his constituents, Jill Robinson.
He added: "Jill contacted me about 'Letters to Heaven postboxes' recently. She was inspired by grieving Matilda Handy, aged 9 who had the idea of a ‘postbox to heaven’ after her Grandparents passed away.
"At today’s meeting, the motion was passed by all members and there will be "Letters to Heaven Postboxes" throughout all cemeteries in the District.
"I know personally how everyone struggles, especially young people, to come to terms with grief.
"Hopefully this is a way that may make it easier for younger generation to send letters to their loved ones no longer with us. I would to thank Jill for coming to me with a great idea and I appreciate the Mayor for letting me bring the motion forward."
