Derry's call centres have been described as the city's "new shirt factories" by Derry City and Strabane District councillors, Shaun Harkin and Maeve O'Neill (People Before Profit).

The councillors said: "Derry's call centres are our new shirt factories. Thousands of workers are employed in them, but too often pay and conditions are not what people deserve.

"Just as shirt factory workers gained and benefited from trade union representation, so too will call centre workers.

"AEGIS have launched the 'Derry Call Centre Campaign' to bring trade union rights to all our call centre workers. We fully support this effort and encourage all call centre workers to get in touch with the campaign.

"At this week's full Council meeting. we are calling on all parties and representatives to back our motion for Derry and Strabane Council to give full support to the campaign. The cost of living crisis has exposed corporate profiteering like never before. Now's the time for workers rights and a collective voice."
