Derry Court: Man fined for assaulting a police officer following 'ideology induced' video evidence

Councillor Carr demands return of Derry courts from Coleraine

District Judge Barney McElholm said that when he first viewed footage of an incident involving a local man and police he thought the offence was substance induced then he realised it was 'ideology induced'.

George Roland McElwee (29) of Rossnagalliagh in Derry was charged with assaulting a police officer on June 1 2020.

Footage of the incident was shown to the court and the defendant was seen in a vehicle stopped by police.

He could be seen becoming irate at the officer's and pushing the car door in the direction of the officer.

Convicting McElwee the judge said that he had put the officer 'in apprehension of something happening' and recorded a conviction.

He said that the offence was ideology induced and added that all ideologies were wrong.

McElwee was fined £200.
