A woman who headbutted another woman who was currently handcuffed has been given a suspended sentence at Derry Magistrate's Court today.

Jasmine Carberry (24) of Bond's Hill in Derry admitted a charge of assault on the female on November 6 last year.

The court heard that police were called to an incident in the Bond's Hill area and had detained and handcuffed a female.

Carberry appeared and initially appeared to be concerned and 'kind' but suddenly her mood changed and she headbutted the other woman who could not defend herself chipping a tooth.

The assault was carried out in front of police and captured on body worn cameras.

At interview Carberry made partial admissions.

A defence barrister, Fergal McCormack, told the court there had been previous issues between the pair.

He said Carberry was under the influence of drugs at the time and the incident would not have occurred if she had not been.

District Judge Barney McElholm said it was 'a nasty headbutt' that did damage.

He sentenced Carberry to 3 months in prison suspended for 18 months and ordered her to pay £500 in compensation 'to cover dental costs and pain and suffering'.
