Chief Executive Karen Hargan joined Community Dental Service team in the main foyer at Altnaagelvin Hospital to deliver vital oral health advice to visitors.
The Community Dental Service within the Western Health & Social Care Trust has launched a public health awareness initiative at Altnagelvin Hospital to mark the 50th anniversary of National Smile Month.
Running from May 12 to June 12 2026, the Oral Health Foundation’s annual campaign is the UK's largest initiative dedicated to improving oral health.
To mark the milestone, Helena Lindsay, Oral Health Co-ordinator, and Maureen Coyle, Dental Hygienist, hosted a dedicated information hub in Altnagelvin Hospital's main foyer to deliver practical, face-to-face preventative care advice to patients, visitors, and staff.
Helena and Maureen explain the three key messages for good oral health are:
- Brush your teeth using a fluoride toothpaste two times a day. Night time is the most important time to brush.
- Limit the amount of times you consume sugary foods and drinks throughout the day. Healthy snacks are better for teeth.
- Visit your dentist at least once a year.
“Dental disease is preventable with a good oral health regime. By taking these three easy steps for looking after your teeth this will benefit your overall health and wellbeing.
“Remember a smile is contagious. Happy National Smile Month!”
