Derry Intermediate Football Championship: Castledawson and Limavady secure narrow victories

A roundup of the Intermediate Football Championship in Derry

DERRY IFL ROUND-UP: McNicholl finds net for Castledawson

Castledawson secured a narrow victory over Banagher

Ballinderry have continued their perfect record to their Intermediate Football Championship (IFC) campaign with a victory over Drumsurn.

The south Derry side came into the competition as major favourites to lift it, and they secured a four point victory away to the always competitive Drumsurn on a scoreline of 1-14 to 1-10.

Castledawson came out on top in an epic game in this round of the IFC, as they secured a one point victory over Banagher.

The 2016 champions travelled to Banagher, and managed to put themselves in second in Group A with the 2-13 to 2-12 victory over the 2018 IFC champions.

And in the final game of the group Limavady survived a scare from Claudy as they held out to secure a one point victory.

Limavady dominated large parts of the game but decided to sit on their lead inviting pressure from Claudy, and as the away side notched points over the bar their confidence grew.

Claudy continued to push right to the end of the game but alas their monumental effort would come to nothing as the Wolfhounds survived, earning a 1-12 to 1-11 win.

It was a much better performance by Claudy after their hammering by local rivals Banagher in the last round, so it will encourage them for the next round.

Meanwhile in Group B, Senior League side Forglen continued their perfect start to the IFC, as they defeated Greenlough.

Travelling to Greenlough on Thursday night was never going to be easy for the visitors, but the 2019 champions secured a controlled six point victory on the scoreline of 1-11 to 0-8.

The only other match played in Group B this weekend was Glenullin against Coleraine, as Faughanvale and Desertmartin play this upcoming Wednesday.

The current IFC champions for the last two seasons repeated their Senior League Promotion/Relegation play-off with Coleraine.

Glenullin secured a 2-12 to a 1-9 victory over Eoghan Rua, to give their first victory of this championship campaign after losing in a tight first round to Foreglen.

So, the march to securing their third straight championship is still possible after this weekend's result.
