Poll topping Mayor and two new councillors in Ballyarnett

Ballyarnett comprises the district electoral areas of Shantallow East, Galliagh, Shantallow and Carnhill. It has 6 seats.

In 2014, Ballyarnett returned 3 Sinn Féin, 2 SDLP and 1 Independent candidate.

In 2019, it returned 3 SDLP, 2 Sinn Féin and 1 Aontú candidate. The SDLP and Aontú gained a seat from Sinn Féin and the Independent.

In 2023, Ballyarnett returned 3 Sinn Féin and 3 SDLP candidates.

The candidates elected to Derry City and Strabane District Council last week were: Sandra Duffy (Sinn Féin), Rory Farrell (SDLP), Catherine McDaid (SDLP), John McGowan (Sinn Féin), Patrick Murphy (Sinn Féin), and Brian Tierney (SDLP).

Colm Cavanagh (Alliance), Damien Doherty (People Before Profit) and Emmet Doyle (Aontú) were eliminated.

Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Sandra Duffy, topped the Ballyarnett poll with a whopping 2,164 first preference votes. There are also two new councillors now representing the area: Patrick Murphy and Catherine McDaid.

The first preference tallies were: Colm Cavanagh (436), Damien Doherty (727), Emmet Doyle (887), Sandra Duffy (2,164), Rory Farrell (1,405), Catherine McDaid (856), John McGowan (1,299), Patrick Murphy (960), and Brien Tierney (1,006).

In 2023, the total number of the Ballyarnett electorate was 19,139. The Turnout was 51.88%. There were 9,929 votes cast. There were 189 invalid votes. There were 9,740 valid votes and the quota was set at 1,392.

The party share of the vote in Ballyarnett was: Alliance 4%, Aontú 9%, People Before Profit 7%, SDLP 34%, and Sinn Féin 45%.
