New machinery provided by the Housing Executive is set to provide local school children with the perfect place to store their wellies this winter.

Dungiven Men’s Shed received a Housing Executive community involvement grant of £1,950.63 to purchase machinery for their workshop in the County Derry town.

Fittingly, one of the first projects these men crafted with their new 27-piece toolkit was a storage shed for Drumsurn Primary School.

Raymond Brady, Project Coordinator, Dungiven Men’s Shed said: “I am so grateful to the Housing Executive for these new tools which include a bench saw, a planer and a router.

“Many of our older tools weren’t fit for purpose so we were able to replace these and also purchase a selection of tools which these men had never used before.

“This has been a huge boost to their creativity and everyone has enjoyed training in how to use these in accordance with health and safety regulations.

“It does my heart good to see these men using their hands in such a purposeful way for the good of the wider community.

“We are delighted with the school garden shed which I understand will be used to store all the children’s outdoor gear and some gardening tools.

“The project has been a life-line for isolated, lonely, or simply retired men who are at a loose end. Since opening our doors a few years ago I have been hugged many times by delighted members of these men’s families and have received heart-breaking letters of thanks from others.

“We have 32 men signed up as members and sadly two members passed away this year. One of whom was our oldest member at 93 years old. We miss them dearly because we learnt so much from them.”

Gareth Doran, Housing Executive Good Relations Officer, Causeway said: “The work being produced in this project is inspirational. Watching the men in action using the new tools safely and correctly brings me much job satisfaction. You can see the pride these men have in their work and how much the close-knit community in the men’s shed means to them.

“I know that it is Raymond’s vision to extend the project further and I wish him every success with that.”
