Thousands of fishing enthusiasts are expected to descend on the River Mourne this weekend as the 2026 North West Angling Fair returns to the Melvin Sports Complex in Strabane on Saturday, March 28 and Sunday, March 29.

Jointly organised by Derry City and Strabane District Council and the Loughs Agency, the popular annual event will once again celebrate all aspects of angling, attracting visitors from across the UK and Ireland.

This year’s fair will be the first major public event to utilise the Melvin Sports Complex’s new £3.2 million multi-sport hub extension, providing enhanced facilities and parking for exhibitors, demonstrators and the public.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Councillor Ruairí McHugh, himself a keen angler, is looking forward to attending on Saturday and showcasing the North West as a premier angling destination.

“The North West Angling Fair is a wonderful celebration of every aspect of fishing and an opportunity for anglers of all levels to learn more about their craft.

“Whether you’re a complete beginner looking to learn the basics or an experienced angler eager to refine your skills, there is something for everyone.

“Our region is blessed with world-class natural resources for angling, with the Foyle, the Mourne, the Derg, and the Finn rivers all located in close proximity to Strabane.

“This fair gives us a chance to showcase that to a wide audience and encourage more visitors to come here and sample it for themselves.”

A packed programme of events is planned across the weekend, including professional casting and fly-fishing demonstrations along the River Mourne, as well as expert-led masterclasses and interactive sessions.

Event organisers have attracted a world class lineup of casting demonstrators including Scott Mackenzie, Gordon Armstrong, Dan O'Neill, Charles Jardine, Peter Driver, Jonathan Moore, Lucinda Ewin and Tom Brown.

For novice anglers or curious members of the public who have never fished before Pauline McClenaghan and Ian Gamble’s casting clinic on the Melvin’s sports pitches will guide you through the basics of fly fishing – the clinics are free however pre-booking is essential with full details on the event website.

Inside the complex’s Main Hall and new extension, visitors will be able to explore a wide range of angling merchandise, with fishing tackle producers, fly-tying brands and specialist outfitters showcasing the latest equipment and innovations.

The ever popular Fly Tyers Row will feature a wide range of tyers exhibiting their craft and sharing their knowledge with the public.

A strong emphasis has also been placed on encouraging youth participation, with a dedicated programme that includes an Under-16s Fly Tying Competition and beginner-friendly demonstrations designed to inspire the next generation of anglers.

APGAI–IRE instructors Arthur Greenwood, Trevor Greene, and Trevor Norris will be on hand to offer guidance, tips, and encouragement throughout the competition.

Council’s Festival and Events Officer, Catherine Ashford, said the fair offers something unique for both seasoned anglers and newcomers.

“We are looking forward to welcoming a world-class lineup of fly dressers and casters to this year’s event.

“From expert demonstrations and technique masterclasses to sourcing the latest equipment, the fair offers a fantastic opportunity to connect with others who share a passion for angling.

“We also want to celebrate the many young people in our region who already take part in the sport and create opportunities for those who are new to fishing.”

Event partners The Loughs Agency will once again have a strong presence and will offer hands on, interactive tuition about rivers, waterways and marine life for all ages.

Ciarán McGonigle, Director of Aquaculture and Shellfisheries at the Loughs Agency, highlighted the event’s wider community and educational value.

“The North West Angling Fair is a fantastic weekend for families, anglers or anyone curious to try something new.

“If you're learning new ways to enjoy time by the water, or want to enhance your passion for angling, we are always happy to engage with people at the event.

“We can share responsible angling practices, point you to helpful resources, and help children and adults alike learn more about our rivers, all while celebrating the vital role angling has played in our communities for generations.”
