Derry City's Michael Duffy with his Player of the Month Award.
Derry City's Michael Duffy has been named the SWI/ SSE Airtricity Player of the Month for June.
Duffy, who scored his 50th goal for the club in last Friday's 7-2 win over Waterford at the Brandywell, while also providing four assists, has been in sensational form of late as the Candystripes have gone on their best run of results to date under Tiernan Lynch.
Derry City went unbeaten in June, picking up one draw and three wins after the mid-season break, and Duffy played a key role. He scored a sensational winner at Shelbourne and also chipped in with two assists as City went back to second place in the Premier Division.
He becomes the first Derry City player to win the award since Jordan McEneff in February, 2023.
Duffy believes he is currently playing his best football since returning to his home town club.
"Aye I do," he said. "This is my fourth year now at Derry City. This has been the best time I’ve had – I’ve had a lot of games, I’ve been consistent and touch wood, I’ve been injury-free and everything’s going well this year. I had a great pre-season under Tiernan and he’s really helped me since he’s come in. It’s just going well, I’m enjoying my football at the minute and the team is winning so we’re in a good place."
Duffy, now on 8 goals, is well on his way to reaching double figures for the season, and he is hoping to emulate or surpass his best goal-scoring record with Derry City, when he scored 16 in 2014.
"That’s the main thing I wanted to do this year, just try to be consistent," he explained. "I think the last few years I’ve been here, there have been a few spells where I have a couple of good games, then a few games where I’ve done nothing. I just want to affect games week in and week out. I’m on 8 goals now and the manager has been onto me all year about getting double figures and assists. That’s good, I like him driving me on like that and always expecting stuff from me. I’m just in a good place at the minute and hopefully I can keep them coming."
