There was a 7 race programme at the Brandywell on Monday with a smart performance from a novice to get the action off to a flying start.

Oliver O’Neill’s Snowplough (Premier Fantasy x Frainey, May ’23) was most impressive on his racing debut over the 300 yards. Well away from trap 6, he had to battle for the lead as he paced up to the first turn. He ran a terrific first bend on the outside of his rivals to gain a significant advantage and thereafter won unchallenged by 5.25 lengths in a sharp time of 16.79. We will be looking forward to seeing what 2025 holds for this most exciting prospect.

The second sprint of the night went to Patsy Doyle’s home bred Brandywell Pride (Broadstrand Bono x Velvet Holly, Oct ’21). Pride pinged out of trap 2 in front, but lacked the early pace to be able to lead into the bend. Flanked by dogs on either side, it looked like her chance had gone, but she tucked in behind the leaders and kept her inside pitch rounding the bends. She ran on well up the straight to get the verdict by a neck in 17.38. This was a sixth career success for this experienced tracker, from 26 starts.

A 2021 whelp also won the third sprint on the night. Mr S Hutchinson’s lightly raced Business Analyst (Dorotas Woo Hoo x Droopys Pen, Jun ’21) has had a dry spell since April 2023, but he notched up a deserving third career success after a good start from trap 6 put him up amongst the leaders on the run to the first turn. He ran a strong first bend and it was enough to give him an advantage that he held to the line. His time was 16.91 and he finished 1.75 lengths ahead of Drumbeg Billy, who ran well in defeat.

The Kyle McCarron and Connor McCarthy owned and Martin Gallagher trained Burnpark Boris (Newinn Taylor x Burnpark Leanne, Nov ’22) won a thrilling 500 yard race which was Race 4 on the programme.

Slowly away from trap 2, he gave himself a tough task to come from the back of the field. He tucked in behind his rivals at the first turn and emerged into the back straight lying only in fourth place. He had moved into second place at the third turn and came up the home straight with determination to get the better of Margan Aggie by 0.5 lengths near the finish line. His time was 28.03 and there certainly was a lot to like about his competitive attitude.

Ferndale Power (Ballyhimkin Jet x Great Jet, May ’23) made it back to back wins with a great effort over the 500 yard trip in Race 5 for owner Johnny Scott. After a fast break from trap 2, he led up to the first bend and never was headed thereafter. He won by 4.25 lengths in 28.09. This is an improving pup and he has a pleasing strike rate of 4 wins from just 12 starts.

We reverted to sprint action for the last 2 races on the programme and it was the Jason Campbell owned Beautiful Emma (Burgess Bucks x Titanic Peggy, Aug ’22) that got a deserving victory after she flew out of trap 5.

She made all thereafter, stopping the clock in 17.09 and had 2.75 lengths to spare over Cals Tune who ran on well to claim the runner up spot. This was her second career success on her ninth start.

The finale went the way of Charlie Baxter’s homebred Generous Cashout (Ballymac Best x Generous Daisy, Sep ’23). He was back to his brilliant best with a polished performance from trap 1. After a speedy exit from traps, he had a comfortable lead at the first turn. Despite his customary wide exit from the second bend, Cashout had plenty in hand over his rivals and he won by 4 lengths in a very fast 16.62. He has a terrific strike rate of 8 wins from only 24 starts.

Action from Lifford Greyhound Stadium

There was some smart novice action on offer at Lifford Stadium over the weekend as the opening round heats of the March ON2/ON3 325 got underway and it was Mineola Eugene that set the standard. This tracker came into the contest with a number of slick qualifying efforts, so it wasn’t surprising to see him installed as the 1/2 favourite to make a winning start to racing life.

Owned by Seamus McCloskey, the April puppy boasted a flawless card when donning the black jacket and he pinged out like a seasoned veteran to comfortably lead. In doing so, the son of Burgess Bucks and Farloe Faith made light work of his rivals as he tracked expertly to stay on strong and seal a three and a three parts of a length victory. Ardnasool Hodor finished a good second and also caught the eye as the clock returned a decent 17.85.

In prior heats, Willie Mullan recorded a quick-fire double with his latest recruits, Dance Hoffa and Missbluewood. ‘Hoffa’ was the first to shine as his 87-pound frame broke best of all from four. Thereafter, the 4/6 jolly stretched out impressively to score by four and a half lengths from Mineola Fereni in second. The time was 17.97.

Shortly after, Missbluewood also justified favouritism as she too flew from traps to run to a virtual solo. In truth, the daughter of Ballymac Anton and Burgess Millie proved a class above her rivals as she ran out a four and a half-length winner. The time was a surprising 18.20 as her performance looked much better to the eye.

The performance of the night came in the Open 325 as Ardagh Beijing returned from a short lay-off to secure a second career win for Conor Crossan. This fellow has a number of brilliant marks on his book and his qualifying effort give a fair indication of his form coming into the contest. That said, it was Import Duty that took a flyer from trap two and he looked set to cement his status as the best that Lifford have to offer over the two-bend trip. However, within a matter of strides ‘Beijing’ soared to the front and the 6/4 chance never relented to come through by a half-length. The time was a sensational 17.50.

Brandywell on Monday; Race 6, 300 Yds Sprint was won by BEAUTIFUL EMMA in 17.07, and indeed it was her namesake, young Emma herself happily posing for her picture with her mum Kate Anderson.

In the finale, Beebees Princess made it back-to-back wins as she again outlined her superiority in A3 company. Trained by Niall McGhee for Martin Lafferty, the daughter of Grangeview Ten and Beebees Star went off at slender odds of 2/5 and she bolted from trap one to quickly assert on the run-up. In doing so, she set a blistering gallop down the back and although Ballintoher Bud made a proper fist of it in the closing stages, ‘Beebees’ kept plenty in reserve to win by a half-length. The time was a rapid 29.02.

On Sunday’s SIS meeting, it proved another fruitful night for the kennel of Cathal and Orla McGhee as they recorded a treble on the card. Slicer was the first to emerge a well-supported winner as the 11/10 chance showed a fine turn of early speed to recover from a moderate start. As a result, the son of Malachi and Ravenswood Mango set a decent gallop, before coming through by three parts of a length clear of Mineola Oyster in second. The time was 29.28.

In the very next contest, the wide-running Ardnasool Lady continued her good run of form. A lady that takes the scenic route on each occasion, she was headed in the early exchanges by both Ollys Ten and Starcash Barry. However, the 6/4 daughter of Grangeview Ten and Farloe Maverick coursed around her rivals to show the superior stamina late on to score. The time was 29.60.

The treble was completed in the next race as the flying early speed of Tippenyaki (Dorotas Wildcat – Love Queen) proved decisive in him sealing back-to-back wins at the Northwest venue. Installed at odds of 13/8, it was the striped jacket of McGhee’s charge that shot ahead of runners early on and he never took his paw off the gas thereafter. Romping to a massive eight and a quarter length victory, the time was a 29.63 and he will bid for a hat-trick of wins next time out.
