Simone Magill in action for Northern Ireland in 2022
County Derry’s Simone Magill dream of leading Northern Ireland out in the European Championship in Switzerland was ended last night with a playoff defeat to Norway.
Northern Ireland suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of Norway in Oslo last night, which added to the 4-0 first-leg defeat in Larne.
The side needed a miracle after the first leg defeat, but any hopes of staging an unlikely comeback were ended early in the first half when Graham Hansen found the net in the 13th minute.
Magill and the Northern Ireland side fought valiantly; however, it would not be enough with them failing to find a way back into contention and grab a foothold in the match.
The second leg was wrapped up two minutes after the interval when Frida Maanum got Norway’s second before substitute Synne Jensen added more sparkle to the result for the home side with her finish in the 78th minute.
A disappointing night for Magill and Northern Ireland, but they will not dwell on a fixture they knew would be a constant uphill struggle with the expectation being that Norway would qualify for Switzerland next year.
The youthful side can take confidence from their two performances and look to this as a learning experience as they look to qualify for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
