The Maldron Hotel was the setting for one of the best tournaments seen in the city for years last Friday night with boxing fans wowed by the talent on display.

Fans were treated to 14 star-studded contests that featured several Ulster and Irish champions as well as some serious up and coming talent and it proved to be a night not for the faint-hearted.

Local clubs were front and centre for this presentation show which was billed as a ‘Co. Derry vs. Ulster Select’ competition, and there were memorable performances throughout.

From St. Joseph’s, Cahir Duffy was on form in his Boy 1, 40kg bout, defeating Jacob Peoples from Flow Boxing Club. Club mate Joe Cunningham, fighting at Youth 70kg, also had a good night as he defeated Dunfanaghy’s Jack Boyle.

At Boy 3, 60kg, Ring’s Cahir O’Doherty, defeated Sean Hughes from Skerries Portrush as the local boxers all showed the fighting spirit and determination that is sure to take them into bright futures in the sport.

It was also a night of recognition at the Maldron Hotel, as Ulster Elite Champions Carleigh Irving and Jack Harkin received ‘Best Elite’ Awards for their magnificent achievements in the past 12 months.
