Coonor Glass celebrates at Croke Park.
Malachy O’Rourke hailed Conor Glass as ‘exceptional’ after the Glen captain dragged his team to an incredible All-Ireland victory at Croke Park.
It looked as if Glen were facing successive All-Ireland final defeats as they trailed by four with just minutes remaining, but Glass stepped up, scoring a remarkable goal which was the catalyst for an unbelievable comeback from Glen which took them to victory.
“He's an unbelievable man,” O’Rourke said afterwards. “At times he took the game to them on his own, and in the last 10 minutes he was exceptional. He’s just an exceptional fella, and a footballer and it’s great that he can do both. He’s a brilliant leader and he showed that out there today. I’m just delighted for him, but I’m just delighted for all the boys, the work they have out in, and for all the lads in the panel and for the club and the community it’s just a brilliant day.”
The audacious finish from Glass sparked a succession of scores from Glen when they needed it most to leave St. Brigid’s devastated.
“At that stage, we were very worried,” O’Rourke admitted. “We were playing well, we were struggling, we were hitting a lot of wides and we weren’t really opening them up, and it was going to take something special and that’s what it was.”
O’Rourke has now led his team to a first All-Ireland Senior title, the latest chapter in a remarkable rise to the top from everyone at Watty Graham’s in recent years.
“It has happened so fast,” O’Rourke said. “It’s a brilliant club and to win a first county title a few years ago was brilliant. But they’re an ambitious group and they just wanted to keep driving on. Obviously last year there was an awful amount of hurt and it was easy saying we’ll get back, but it was a long road back. In fairness, we probably saved our worst performance for last, but it’s just the character in the boys, they just wouldn’t give up, they just kept plugging away and I’m just delighted that they got over in the line in the end up.”
