'We should have had more goals' - Derry captain Conor Glass

We should have had more goals - Conor Glass

Derry captain, Conor Glass, while happy enough with the win, felt his side could have had more goals against Donegal on Sunday.

They finished 3-14 to 1-15 winners and Glass described the game from a Derry viewpoint as "a good performance but not great from us".

Although they had three goals, he added: "We probably should have had a couple more.

"But we left them out on the pitch and it's always something good to work on going into next week.

"If we had've scored about six or seven goals, we probably mightn't have such a focus for next week. But at least we have a focus for next week."

Glass says Derry want to top the group which will mean one game less in their bid for All-Ireland glory. They meet Clare in the final game while Donegal face Monaghan, who are level with Derry at present at the top of Group 4.

Last year’s All-Star midfielder Glass, 25, said: “We want to top the group. “It looks like the easiest path to go forward. One less game - that is the long and short of it really.”

Glass feels that the Donegal-Monaghan game will be close and he will be hoping for a Donegal win in that game.

“Donegal won’t be an easy challenge for Monaghan but we have to do our own job against Clare.”

Glass also reckons failing to finish top of the group, and having to play in a preliminary quarter-final, heightens the risk of injury.

Glass admitted Derry were ‘passive’ against Monaghan’ in their Round 1 fixture which finished 0-14 apiece.

The former AFL player felt they were up for the game on Sunday: “We brought intent, albeit we might have been a bit over the top in the first half.

“We gave away a few free-kicks but it set a good platform for us.

“I guess Donegal in Ballybofey, it’s not an easy job.

“Even though Donegal aren’t as fit and firing as they have been over the past ten years, it’s never an easy job up there. Thankfully we came away with a win.”

Derry remain unbeaten in the Championship and are being talked about as serious All-Ireland contenders at this stage.

But Glass said there is little to choose between a handful of the top teams.

He said: “Over the last year or so, football has changed - a lot of teams are playing similarly.

“You don’t have to have the best forwards now because of the way that teams are setting up.”
