Institute picked up a first league win since November as they beat promotion hopefuls Annagh United at the Brandywell.

First half goals from Jamie McCormick and Calvin McCallion gave ‘Stute the three points, which were desperately needed after an 11-game winless run which had taken the Derry side to the brink o the relegation places at the foot of the Lough 41 Championship.

Beaten 6-2 last week at Ballyclare, ‘Stute needed to start the game strongly and they did just that when Jamie McCormick forced a brilliant save from Ronan Burns  after just 13 minutes. The ‘Stute forward powered an effort towards the top corner but the ball was pushed behind for a corner.

The momentum was with the home side and Jamie Dunne then showed immaculate skill to win a corner. Cormac Burke’s delivery was cleared to the right hand side where Shaun Leppard sent a dangerous left-footed cross to the back post, straight onto the head of McCormick who powered the ball past Burns to give his team a valuable lead.

It got even better for ‘Stute when they doubled their lead on 26 minutes and Annagh were again undone by brilliant football again from the home side. Jamie Dunne played a one-two with McCormick to open up the space for crossing and he put a low cross towards the near post where Calvin McCallion arrived and cleverly placed the ball across goal and into the net to make it 2-0.

Annagh tried to hit back before the break, and they came close when Ruairi McDonald’s 20-yard free kick just flew wide of the target with Dylan Doherty scrambling across goal.

Annagh struggled to make any headway in the second half, and they failed to manage a shot on target until the 71st minute when Jamie McDonald’s volley was straight into the hands of Doherty.

Annagh desperately tried to make something happen late on, but 'Stute defended resolutely to pick up a hugely valuable win.
