There are reports of widespread flooding across Derry.

Storm Ashley is expected to bring much disruption to Derry across the weekend.

Derry City and Strabane District Council has encouraged the public to take all the necessary precautions to keep safe.

All council-run public parks, play parks, and grass pitches have been closed on Sunday in the interest of health and safety.

Council outdoor sports and leisure facilities and courts will also be closed. All scheduled matches due to take place on Saturday 19th October on Council pitches will proceed; however, all matches scheduled for Sunday 20th October have been cancelled due to the current weather warning, and Council is in the process of contacting clubs and user groups accordingly.

However, the weather is already causing much disruption for road users as flooding occurs across the city.

There have been reports on social media of Limavady Road flooding in the Waterside of the city and Victoria Road, particularly near Stoneypath and the Everglades, to make it look more like the area in Florida that shares its name that is home to American alligators.

Meanwhile, on the city side, there have been reports of flooding on the Northland Road beside St Mary’s College.

The council has advised the public to take extreme care.

Parts of Knockwellan Park have also seen flooding.

SDLP councillor Sean Mooney said: "These events are becoming more prevalent for local residents in this area, who have to put up with this and the associated stress and anxiety. Hopefully, the relevant departments can try and sort this out."
