Public exhibition to be held for planned lithium battery storage system in Feeny

A public exhibition is to be held following news of planned construction of a lithium battery storage system in the townland of Ballyhanedin near Feeny.

According to the relevant planning application, the proposed development consists of the construction of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) involving proven lithium battery technology, which will provide services to the National Grid system.

The planning application was submitted to the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council by Neo Environmental, a consultancy providing environmental and technical services to the commercial energy, property and infrastructure sectors across the UK and Ireland.

The proposed build was flagged by locals in Claudy, five miles from the site. According to a local community group, a "concerned neighbour" said that they "feel the local community should be aware of this application".

A public exhibition is set to be held at 7pm on Monday 16th September in Banagher Parish Hall, Feeny for the planned battery energy storage system.

Battery energy storage systems (BESS), are devices that enable energy from renewables, like solar and wind, to be stored and then released when the power is needed most.

Lithium-ion batteries, which are used in mobile phones and electric cars, are currently the dominant storage technology for large scale plants to help electricity grids ensure a reliable supply of renewable energy.
