August 12 marked the 30th anniversary of the unveiling of Derry’s Gasmask Mural in the Bogside.

It was unveiled on the 25th anniversary of the Battle of the Bogside, a major event and one of the igniting events of the Troubles.

The Bogside Artists Ireland posted on Facebook to commemorate this anniversary.

The post said: “30 years ago today, on the 12th of August 1994, we unveiled the now world-renowned Gasmask Mural in the Bogside.

“1994 was the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Bogside, a major event in 1969 at would change our lives forever and the course of our history.”

As part of the post, a picture was posted of the mural, the Bogside Artists, and Paddy Coyle.

The famous mural is of Coyle as a 12-year-old in a gas mask during the battle.

Sadly, Coyle and one of the artists, William Kelly, have passed since the unveiling of the mural. And the post remembered both Coyle and Kelly.
