Five people were taken to safety after a nine-hour mission by the Lough Swilly lifeboat crew on Monday.

The Lough Swilly RNLI received a page at 8.13am on Monday.

They were alerted to assist a fishing vessel with five people on board 25 nautical miles off Malin Head.

The boat had developed mechanical problems and they contacted Malin Head Coast Guard for help.

The lifeboat volunteers established a tow and took the boat to safety before returning to Buncrana to refuel and make ready for service.

A spokesperson said: “Remember, if you’re in difficulty in or on the water or see someone in trouble, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.”
