Two football supporters from Co Derry are more than halfway through a 215 mile charity walk in aid of men’s mental health.

Derry friends Odhran Madden from Greenlough and Seamus Groogan from Maghera, set off from Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium on Monday, June 8, and are making their way on foot to Celtic Park in Glasgow.

The pair are undertaking the challenge in aid of mental health and suicide prevention charities S.T.E.P.S and Beacon Counselling Trust.

The challenge, which is taking place during Men’s Mental Health Month, was inspired by Odhran and Seamus’ belief that football plays an important role in supporting men’s wellbeing.

“Football is a massive help in men’s mental health as it’s often the only time during the week that they meet up and talk, whether that be to play or watch a game,” Odhran said.

The friends, lifelong supporters of Manchester City and Celtic said they chose the route between the two stadiums to symbolise the positive impact football can have in peoples lives.

Football has always been a huge part of their lives, “We’ve seen firsthand how football can bring people together, create belonging and provide comfort during difficult times,” they said.

Odhran and Seamus hope their walk will encourage more men to speak openly about their mental health.

“We feel that men still don’t talk to each other in this day and age,” Odhran added.

The pair have been sharing their journey daily on social media and launched a GoFundMe, hoping to raise £10,000 for the two charities.

The GoFundMe has already raised £8,700 with over 300 donations.

Odhran and Seamus are expected to arrive at Celtic Park at 2pm on Tuesday, 16 June, after completing the final leg of their journey and welcome anyone to meet them at the finish line.

“We believe it’s really important to bring attention to men’s mental health and the support available to those who need it,” they added.
