Save up to £870: Learn how to cut energy costs during Energy Saving Week

Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, encouraged people to check out the daily energy saving tips from the Energy Saving Trust throughout the five-day campaign.

With energy prices remaining high many households will be looking for practical ways to reduce their energy costs this winter, and help is at hand with the return of Energy Saving Week.

Back for its 25th year from Monday, November 24, Energy Saving Week raises awareness and supports local people in managing their energy bills and cutting carbon emissions.

Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, encouraged people to check out the daily energy saving tips from the Energy Saving Trust throughout the five-day campaign.

“Winter always brings additional pressures for households that have to deal with bigger fuel and energy bills. Any information that will assist people in finding cost effective solutions which will reduce bills and improve energy efficiency are very welcome.

“Energy Saving Week is a good opportunity to raise awareness and make us all focus more on making the small changes that could make a big difference when it comes to saving money and cutting carbon.”

Each day the campaign, which is supported by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (Home Energy Conservation Authority) and delivered in partnership with regional organisations, will focus on a different theme offering practical tips on simple changes. By following the top tips it could reduce annual energy bills by £870!

Energy Manager for Derry City and Strabane District Council, Paul Doherty, said: “From reducing time spent in the shower to turning off appliances, we can all make a difference by becoming more energy aware. There are a number of schemes also organised by the NI Housing Executive to support people struggling with the increased costs over winter such as the Affordable Warmth Scheme, and the NI Oil Savings Network.

“We want to equip people with the information and advice to make the changes they need, and Council will continue to work with our partners to ensure energy saving is a priority across Derry and Strabane.”

Laura McGadie, group head of energy at Energy Saving Trust, said: “Energy Saving Week is a great chance for people to explore simple steps that can help cut energy costs and lower carbon emissions. With energy bills typically at their highest during the winter months, we’re proud to be working alongside the Northern Ireland Housing Executive and its partners to reach as many communities across Northern Ireland as we can.”

Energy Saving Week is delivered in partnership with The Housing Executive, Power NI, NEA NI, Bryson Energy, the Consumer Council, Radius Housing, Clanmil Housing, Choice Housing, NIFHA, Apex Housing Association, Phoenix Energy, Evolve, Kinecx Energy, and SSE Airtricity.
